When Amed cries, Aziz cries too; when Aziz laughs, Amed laughs too. The twin brothers could have lived peacefully in the shade of the orange trees, but a shell crosses the sky and kills their grandparents. War seizes their childhood and separates their fates. Men come to demand revenge for the blood that was shed, and Amed, unless it is Aziz, will have to consent to the greatest of sacrifices. Everyone will pay the martyrs' tribute, the dead as well as those left behind. The novel leaves the reader to tell the pure from the deceitful and the fanatics from the heroes.
