Montreal, early winter 2002. The narrator is not yet twenty. He loves Lovecraft, metal, comic books and science fiction, studies graphic design and wants to be a cartoonist. But for months he has been avoiding his friends, lying and running up debts: he is a gambler, and all his money goes into video lottery terminals. Broke, isolated and without an apartment, he becomes a dishwasher at La Trattoria, where he befriends Bébert, a seasoned cook, a tireless ogre with a rapper's gift of the gab, already worn down by alcohol and speed. Over a month and a half of evening and double shifts in the pre-holiday rush, among owners, chefs, cooks, servers and busboys, he tries to master his obsession.
