Florence has no love for writers, those neurotic creatures, and even less for their books. She does love Zéno, however, and Zéno loves Pierre Laliberté, a legendary novelist whose face nobody has ever seen. Through Zéno, Florence discovers one day that Laliberté has stolen the most precious sentence anyone ever said to her. So she sets off on the trail of this impostor who plunders other people's lives to build his books, in a novel told like a detective story that is also a tribute to literature and to those who make it.
