A young woman gets pregnant, a man flees, and a little girl is left with a riddle. Like the hidden drawing that appears in children's puzzle books when the numbered dots are joined, the narrator gathers the little she knows about the stranger who refused to become her father, who vanished after her mother became pregnant in 1968. When reason runs out, she has only invention left to fill the blanks that a whole life will never fill.
