All prizes Germany

Deutscher Buchpreis

Germany · Since 2005 · For books in German

Awarded each October by the foundation of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association to the novel of the year written in German, open to authors from any country.

The German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein) first awarded the prize in 2005, to Arno Geiger's Es geht uns gut. Publishers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland may each submit up to two novels published between October of the previous year and September. A seven-member jury, chosen anew each year by the Akademie Deutscher Buchpreis and usually made up of writers, journalists and booksellers, reads all submissions. It names a longlist of 20 novels in August and a shortlist of six in September. The winner is announced on the Monday before the Frankfurt Book Fair, at a ceremony in the Kaisersaal of Frankfurt's Römer. The winner receives 25,000 euros and the other five finalists 2,500 euros each. No author has won twice. In 2008 several writers criticised the selection as based on criteria outside literature and objected to the rule that finalists attend the ceremony.
