Gilbert Silvester, a lecturer who researches beards, is in shock: last night he dreamed that his wife was cheating on him. In an absurd act of panic, he leaves her, boards the first plane he can find and flies to Japan to gain some distance. There he comes across the travel writings of the classical poet Bashō and suddenly has a goal: like the wandering monks of old, he wants to see the moon over the pine islands. But before he sets off, he meets the student Yosa, who is travelling with very different reading: The Complete Manual of Suicide. Two opposites set out on a journey together.
