One evening, instead of writing, the narrator googles her first love and learns that he threw himself from an eighth floor almost five years ago. She is shocked, as much by his suicide as by the fact that she never missed him. She begins an investigation into love, working through her love life by way of twelve men who share far more than their names with the apostles. And the longer she writes, the more her present love life, the frame of the story, pushes into the centre: a round dance of love and a dance of death, asking how love relates to death, and what writing can do in the face of it.
