At the end of the eighteenth century, two young Germans set out to measure the world. Alexander von Humboldt, idealist and adventurer, fights his way through jungle and steppe. The mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauss, a sceptic who hardly leaves the house, proves at home in Göttingen that space is curved, having travelled further in his head than his counterpart ever does on foot. The two could not be more different, and their lives unfold between loneliness and love, absurdity and greatness, failure and success.
