Brage Prize

Brageprisen

Norway · Since 1992 · For books in Norwegian Bokmål or Norwegian Nynorsk

Awarded each autumn by the foundation Den norske Bokprisen (Stiftelsen Brageprisen) to new Norwegian books; this is its fiction category for adult readers, open to novels, story collections and poetry in Bokmål or Nynorsk. A jury nominates three or four books (four since 2007) and picks the winner.

The Brage Prize was established in 1992 to honour new Norwegian literature and to stimulate interest in reading. It is awarded by the foundation Den norske Bokprisen, with the Norwegian Publishers Association as secretariat. In each category a jury of booksellers, librarians, critics and academics reads every title submitted for the year and nominates the finalists, four today and often three in the early years; a separate electorate then reads the nominated books anonymously and votes for the winner. The prizes are presented at a ceremony in late November. Alongside fiction, the categories are books for children and young people, non-fiction, and non-fiction for children and young people, and an honorary prize is also given. In its early years the prize also had an open class whose genre changed from year to year.
