It is 1989, the world is turning and the Wall comes down. Over a few intense autumn days we follow Arvid Jansen, thirty-seven and about to be divorced. His mother has been diagnosed with cancer and abruptly sails for Denmark on the old ferry Holger Danske, with something left undone there, and two days later Arvid goes after her because he feels he must. The story reaches back to the early 1970s, when Arvid took a factory job and, in his mother’s eyes, threw away the chance of a life other than her own, and to the morning he first saw a young girl in a blue coat at an underground station.
