In the summer of 1948, fifteen-year-old Trond stays with his father at a summer farm by a river near the Swedish border. What happens there, death and betrayal, shifts the ground beneath his whole life. More than fifty years later, three years after losing his second wife, he moves with his dog to a small house by a lake far to the east, the solitude he says he has always longed for. His closest neighbour turns out to be another damaged old man with a dog, someone from long ago whom he cannot avoid, and the summer of 1948 begins to torment him.
