Eli has lived with voices since she was a child. Espen, Erik and Emil arrive first; in adulthood comes Eugen, a stylish and decadent artist prince. They have largely run her life, held her back and at times pushed her into psychosis, though as a writer she sometimes draws on them. Through years of a troubled family, self-harm, drink, admissions to hospital, medication and therapy, she is also a footballer and boxer and, in good spells, makes books and films. The carers who try to reach her are patient and well-meaning but often helpless, and Eli fights both for help with daily life and for the right to decide over her own life.
