The narrator has waited tables for thirteen years at The Hills, a slightly shabby continental restaurant in central Oslo with a worn mosaic floor. Discreet and watchful, he keeps its old-European order, where everything has its place and little gets in from outside, until unrest arrives in the form of a very young woman among the regulars.
