Premiul Observator cultural pentru proză

Romania · Since 2007 · For books in Romanian

Awarded each spring in Bucharest by the literary weekly Observator cultural to the best book of prose in Romanian of the previous year (in 2007 and 2008 the category also covered memoirs), chosen by a jury of critics from a shortlist voted by its reviewers.

The literary weekly Observator cultural launched its prizes in 2007, on its seventh anniversary; the 2025 gala was the 19th edition. Each year about twenty critics and writers vote on the nominations, and voters with a book in a category abstain in that category. A final jury of seven, chaired in recent years by Carmen Mușat, then chooses the winners, who are announced on stage at a gala at the Odeon Theatre in Bucharest. Besides prose, the main categories are poetry, debut, literary criticism and history, and memoir and essay. Other awards include the Gheorghe Crăciun prize for a body of work, a prose prize chosen by high school students, and four translation prizes run with foreign cultural institutes. Gabriela Adameșteanu won the prose prize in 2019 for Fontana di Trevi.
