The story begins on an Armenian side street in Focșani in the 1950s, amid the steam of freshly roasted coffee, the smells of grandmother Armenuhi’s pantry and grandfather Garabet’s old books and photographs. The old Armenians of the narrator’s childhood have no pleasant tales to tell: their stories are disturbing, told to lift the weight of a trauma that is theirs and their forebears’. Through them unfolds the history of the 1915 genocide, of the endless convoys of deportees driven into the desert of Deir ez-Zor, and of the Armenians who took the road into exile, woven together with the story of the narrator’s own family.
