One Friday in December 1897, a man is found unconscious in a field outside Bucharest, on the Băneasa estate. Everyone suspects something different: is he an international crook trying to disappear, a criminal, or just ill? Little by little a crowd gathers round him: a doctor and his daughter, a policeman, an eight-year-old errand boy who runs letters and parcels all over the capital, and the journalists of the newspaper Universul. The story, half a police mystery, covers only thirteen days, up to the end of the year, and brings back the Bucharest of around 1900.
