Joseph Strauss, a dentist from Berlin, decides in the spring of 1866 to follow a captain of dragoons, Karl Ludwig von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who has agreed to rule the United Principalities as Carol I. After an eventful journey he reaches Bucharest with his cat and finds a strange city with oriental ways. He marries a Serbian woman, Elena Ducovici, and becomes close to the prince, for whom he brews teas meant to drive away his anxieties.
