Greek State Literary Prize for the Novel

Κρατικό Βραβείο Μυθιστορήματος

Greece · Since 1956 · For books in Greek

Awarded by the Greek Ministry of Culture to a novel written in Greek and published in the previous calendar year; each prize carries the year it is given for, one year after the books it judges (the 2010 prize went to a novel of 2009). A shortlist was published in some years only, and announcements often came late.

The Greek State Literary Prizes are given by the Ministry of Culture on the recommendation of a committee of critics, academics and writers. In their post-war form they date from 1956, with the novel among the first categories; until 1988 each category had a first and a second prize, and since 1989 there has been a single prize per category, which the committee may split between two books. The committee judges books published in the previous calendar year and deposited with the National Library of Greece, and chooses the winner from a shortlist. Shortlists were made public in some years before 2010 and became mandatory under Law 3905/2010, which reorganised the prizes, added new categories and required the committee to publish its reasoning.
