Vivi Choleva earns her living as a private carer, looking after elderly people in their homes. Her son, Linos, has gone badly astray. When he is granted a few days' leave, the two of them travel to Delphi, and at the ancient sanctuary they grow closer, although years of very different lives have opened a gulf between them that has long seemed impossible to cross. In the five days of the trip their past comes out, and the reader slowly learns what burdens they carry: their own guilt and grief, and above all the weight borne for years by a large part of Greek society, which watches powerless as history is made without it.
