Wera, a barber for men, and Karol, a jockey, spent their whole life together, from comfort to want. Now Karol is dead and Wera goes around her old lovers to find him shoes to be buried in, since good shoes for a dead man are hard to come by. She has lost her love, her husband and her work, and sold what little they had at the market, but she refuses to mourn, to be a widow or a victim. She loves whom she likes and lives as she pleases. Her voice, in a monologue of sharp, cutting sentences, carries the novel.
