Zack, a Bulgarian in his thirties and a former photographer now working for a Californian drug company, has just been left by Stella, the love of his life, who came to America with him. To drown his grief he crosses into Mexico, and at the end of a wild night in Tijuana he steps into a bloody scene, saves a stranger and escapes in his attackers' van, only to find a sack of fresh marijuana inside. With the drugs in the back and a second-hand film Nikon, he sets off across the continent for New York, taking pictures on the way. His dangerous present alternates with the past: meeting Stella at art school, student years in 1990s Bulgaria, abandoned rock-star dreams, their marriage and new life in America, and Stella's rise as an artist.
