The novel runs on two lines. In Lviv before and during the Second World War, four friends, a Ukrainian, a Pole, a German and a Jew, whose fathers served in the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic and fell at Bazar in 1921, have all kinds of adventures, fall in love and go to war, but never betray their friendship. Among the threads are the defence of Lviv at the start of the war, the German occupation, the Janowska camp and its orchestra of prisoners who play the tango of death. In the present day other heroes, in Lviv and in Turkey, hunt for ancient manuscripts of a lost culture said to hold the secret of immortality, pursued by agents of the security services.
