But the war turns everything upside down, and his relatives land on his head: his mother, a one-legged uncle, a distant relative with her drooling little dog, his sister with a depressed friend, and even two cats, a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. While at home windows are blown out and people die in their hundreds and thousands, in Tolik's house the war is of another kind, fought in the details of everyday life by people trying to make a temporary home in a foreign country, smelling of tomatoes, with their souls still in Ukraine.
