At the beginning of the 20th century, as the First World War and the end of the Habsburg monarchy approach, August Lamm, a Jewish lawyer, belongs by birth to the respectable bourgeoisie of Murska Sobota. Out of vanity he buys a prestigious motor car, and with it begins a chain of misfortunes: a fatal accident for which he is neither legally nor morally to blame. A shadow of doubt nevertheless falls on him, and overnight he is socially isolated. As he wonders what caused his fall and whether he could have prevented it, he is forced to ask who he really is, while his class, family and religious identity crumble and the war isolates the whole town.
