The novel is made of three stories about seemingly very different people, all of them successful until recently and now broken: the American art historian Hilary Hudson, Milutin Čabrinović, called Anthracite, a minister in the government before the political changes in Belgrade, and Đorđe Istina, a philosophy student about to graduate. What joins them is their dreams, and a world of upended values in which they can neither adapt nor survive. Their fall seems both inevitable and deserved; they flee into fantasy and dreams, which turn into nightmares and smaller or greater madness. Cruel and funny at once, the book takes in the end of the twentieth century, modern art, politics, religion and a world ruled by money.
