Everyday life in the Soviet Union, taken apart into pieces of a puzzle: themes, heroes, situations, memories, things and key words, each readable on its own, the whole visible only once they are fitted together. The picture makes no claim to be complete or objective. Without offering a moral verdict, it tries to capture the outlines, the state of mind and the way a culture thought and spoke, so as to understand what the Soviet Union was and what its absence means.
