On 17 April 1868 a large sailing ship runs aground off Reykjanes, and between the barrels of fish oil on its lower deck a pitiful creature is found: a teenage girl named Abba, who turns out to have a learning disability. The naturalist Friðrik B. Friðjónsson of Brekka takes her in, and they live together on his family farm until she dies. Then begins the struggle between Friðrik and the Reverend Baldur Skuggason, priest of the valley, who is not all he seems. A romantic tale of mid-nineteenth-century Iceland that plays with the tradition of Icelandic folk tales.
