In 1856 Vasile Capșa, who will found Bucharest’s famous restaurant, fails in his first big business venture, in Crimea. In 1993, in the Hotel Universal, once the centre of old Bucharest and by then a refuge for the student bohemia of the first years after the Revolution, a murder or a suicide takes place. The link between the two moments is Maia, a sleepwalker and a great-great-great-granddaughter of the “golden girl” Capșa brought back to Bucharest from Crimea. In a room of the hotel she writes and rewrites the family epic her grandmother told her over many years, the story of a vanished, motley, cosmopolitan and cruel world.
