In the 1930s Gavril M., a young agronomist, is sent to the Dniester valley to revive an abandoned farm in northern Bukovina. Gloomy, troubled by dreams and thoughts he keeps to himself, but enterprising and brave, the “young master”, as his workers call him, gradually learns the rules and the people of a world he is set on reviving. He has to stand up not only to the memory of Wagner, the Austrian who ran the farm before him and is still seen as the absolute authority, but also to the villagers’ prejudices, to his own fears born of dark moments in his past, and to the mysterious world embodied by the Roma woman Tina.
