Monaco, spring 1968: the glamorous crowd is milling among cars and drivers before the Grand Prix when disaster strikes in front of the cameras. Jack Preston, a quiet mechanic in the Lotus pit crew, drags Deedee, a starlet who stands for the permissive new age, out of a fire, saving her face but scarring himself terribly. His racing days are done. In a backward English hamlet where the 1950s linger on, he sits beside his wife watching Deedee's career take off on TV, hoping for the gesture of thanks he is sure will transform his life.
