One night in September 1940, the most important people in Janka Weiner's circle of family, lovers and friends gather in a photographer's studio in Pest: her cousin who runs a fashion shop, her younger brother, a seminarian, and old companions, among them a military diplomat, an aspiring poet, journalists and girlfriends. They are Swabian, Hungarian, Jewish and half-Jewish Hungarians, excited by the regaining of territory in Transylvania as much as by the new racial protection law, while they love one another stubbornly, feverishly or hopelessly. The novel reveals where they came from and looks ahead to what will become of them by the end of the war, asking how parts of a nation, such as Hungarian Jewry, come to be seen as foreign and to be cut off.
