Noboru tells the life of his grandfather Hideo, one of the thousands who crossed from Japan to toil on plantations in inland São Paulo. Harsh labour and an alien culture quickly crush the hopes of the voyage, yet Hideo will not bend: not when his first wife Kimie dies, nor when his Brazilian-born son and daughter adopt local ways he despises. Three generations later the family has moved from the fields to shopkeeping in Liberdade, having lived through the hostility Japanese Brazilians faced during the war.
