After a long drought, Israel is hit by a winter of unheard-of fury, and by an epidemic nicknamed the 'Saudi flu', which many believe to be biological warfare. Peace talks have given way to violence, and the exhausted media struggle to keep up. Six main characters from different communities and classes try to survive the season: Katie, who washes stairwells, and her unemployed husband Boaz; refined Liat from Tel Aviv and her unstable divorced friend Iris; Liat's brother Adir, who runs the family business and is unsure about his future with lovely Tasaro; and gloomy, eccentric Angelica. Chance ties them together, while the country's president, a keen birdwatcher, tours funerals and hospitals.
