Petr Järvi, a Finnish scholar who studies lakes and rivers of the past, has heard nothing from his Cambridge friend Graham Hugo for years when a message invites him into a strange contest. In honour of the astronomer Halley, teams will circle the planet along longitude zero within twelve months, travelling as people could in the eighteenth century, under sail or on foot, inside a narrow corridor. Each member wears a tracking cord that gets a knot at every stage. With nothing to keep him at home, Petr agrees. Graham's wife Isla comes along, and in France Petr's younger brother Kari tags on and becomes the voice that stitches together logbooks and notes. The voyage grows chaotic, Graham turns closed and obstinate, the couple drift apart, and Kari and Isla draw close.
