Josef and Maria Moosbrugger live with their children on the edge of a mountain village in western Austria. They are the outsiders, the poor, the riff-raff: the Bagage. It is the time of the First World War, and Josef is called up into the army. Maria and the children are left alone, more isolated than ever, dependent on the mayor's protection, and Maria's beauty keeps putting her in danger. Then Georg arrives from Hanover, who speaks standard German, is very handsome and one day knocks on the family's door. Maria becomes pregnant with Grete, the child Josef will never speak a word to: the narrator's mother.
