In the autumn of 1969 a girl known as the American girl, Eddie, drowns in the place everyone calls the District, and her friend Björn is found hanged. That double death sends stories rippling out across the years and to other places, always circling back to the District. Rumours and fantasies gather around the dead girl, sometimes glittering, sometimes grim. Some years on, two local girls, Sandra and Doris, start digging into what happened and try to piece it together, an obsession that leads to another tragedy. Friendship, early death, lies, love, lost hopes and music run through the book.
