Told in the first person and based on the stories of a real man, this adventure follows Yonko, known as Chekmo after his grandfather. It begins in the dying People's Republic of Bulgaria, with its craving for imported goods, the forced renaming of Turks, army service, black-market currency, gambling and run-ins with the authorities. In Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie museum he and the woman he loves resolve to throw themselves into one wild adventure together. The winds of change carry them abroad with hundreds of thousands of others: refugee camps, deals in a Berlin not yet fully reunited, and an attempt at honest work around American soldiers that ends in tragicomedy. Back home, tracksuited strongmen rule and everyone has to save himself, so emigration again looks like a fresh start. The result is a comic chronicle of the 1980s and 1990s.
