A crockery-shop worker of today, after sessions of regression therapy, is convinced she once lived in biblical times and wrote scripture herself. That former self now tells her own story: a herdsman's plain, sharp-witted daughter who travels from the desert to Jerusalem and ends up among Solomon's hundreds of brides. Since she alone in the harem can write, the king hands her the task of recording her people's past, and the stuffy palace scribes resent her for it. Seen from her side, court life and everyday Jerusalem become the stuff of a bawdy, learned comedy.
