The Bavarian scientists crossed thousands of kilometres of Brazil from 1817 and sailed home with specimens, notes, and a boy and a girl from the forest, who died soon after arriving in Europe. Turning away from the explorers' version, the novel tells the story of the children, here called Iñe-e and Juri. In a parallel strand set today, Josefa comes face to face with a portrait of Iñe-e at a show and realises how much of her own ancestry has been lost.
