One summer, family on his mother's side take a ten-year-old boy to a cape in Kyushu, a village squeezed between a narrow bay and low hills, where a distant aunt will look after him. Behind him lies a cramped city flat where he and his older brother, who can neither speak nor move, were left mostly alone by a mother more interested in men than in her sons, often with nothing to eat. She always loathed this place. Here the boy, still marked by those years, is taken in by kindly grown-ups, by the sea and the hills, and by presences beyond the everyday: now and then the ghost of a boy long dead appears and urges him on. Little by little he starts to say yes to life.
