Maria, a peasant woman from the Transylvanian Plain, finds no fulfilment in love or in life and ends up disowning and cursing her own children. Around this terrifying mother, like a spider’s web, the Sucutardean and Văleanu families weave their lives over the course of a century. The Apocalypse some of the clan’s millenarian members expect at any moment, strict religious rules and the poverty brought by collectivisation shape exceptional characters and fates.
