Mata Doce

Maria Teresa shares a big old house, heavy with family lore and fronted by white roses, with her mothers. Outside pass the village's characters: a harmonica-playing sweet vendor and his dog, a godmother who once sold herself, the shopkeeper's twin boys, a cattle slaughterer whose mother is a priestess, and Zezito, the man she is going to marry. A festive Saturday on the eve of the ceremony brings the violence of a local landowner into her life. Recounting it, she gradually lays bare her neighbours' hidden passions, family quarrels and long-kept secrets.
