Valmares is an invented village on the Algarve coast, and the Leandros are its old, fading family. When the rest of the clan leaves on holiday, Milene, in her thirties but behaving like a girl of twelve, stays behind with the family's elderly matriarch. Their crumbling cannery, the source of the Leandros' former wealth, is now home to the Matas, a large family of Cape Verdean immigrants, and Milene lets them stay. She is drawn to Antonino Mata, a widower with three children who works the cranes rising over the coast. Through her unguarded eyes the story uncovers, layer by layer, a place changing fast, along with the racism and fear of strangers that the change brings out.
