Fresh from finishing his first novel, the author named Jonas receives an email from a man called Kadir, who says he grew up with Jonas's father. Writing in a wildly inventive Swedish spiced with French and Arabic, Kadir insists the next book should be about the father, a celebrated photographer. As Jonas starts drafting, Kadir's letters about youth in Tunisia collide with Jonas's memories of his own childhood, and the two voices end up almost at war. Out of them comes a picture of a nation that preaches openness while racism runs through daily life, as New Democracy wins seats in parliament and a gunman hunts immigrants. Yet Kadir seems less and less reliable.
