Samuel is gone, and everyone who knew him has a theory. Some claim he and Laide were made for each other; others that jealousy and a wish to be remembered drove him; others again blame Vandad, a friend who would do anything for cash. With Vandad now in prison, Laide abroad and the house in ruins, a writer interviews those close to Samuel to reconstruct his final day. The fragments do not add up: a civil servant who danced like a lunatic, a tender grandson, a faithful mate, a phoney. What surfaces is a young man running from himself. Set in contemporary Stockholm, the novel weighs love against money and friendship against violence, and asks which recollections deserve belief.
