After Mio's death, Rut built a comfortable life for herself and their son: a seaside house, money, and a job at a mysterious firm that sways the public through made-up voices. The ten-year-old knows nothing of his father, and is safe. Then Rut learns that a comatose boy in hospital carries an old CD player, and on its golden disc Mio is talking, though he ought to be dead, describing roofs with a view of the ocean in a place he calls a library suspended over the void. Told through many voices, the novel deals with companionship and yearning, about who gets mourned, and about the power of fiction, imagined lives and libraries.
