All he has ever wanted is to fly for Uganda's air force, and the dream seems close when he is sent to the Greek air force academy at Dekelia near Athens. On 26 January 1971 the news arrives: Idi Amin has taken over in a coup, and before long an aircraft comes to collect every Ugandan cadet. He decides on the spot to stay behind and claim asylum in Greece, the choice that will define him. From then on his life goes wrong. Grounded and adrift, he takes work spraying crops from the air in Zambia, but the police seize him as soon as he lands in Lusaka and plan to expel him to an unknown destination. Without a country, he must struggle to survive. The book draws on the story of the author's own father.
