Brno, 30 April 1945, a day suspended between war and peace: the centre is free, fighting still rages in the northern suburbs, German troops and the SS are pulling out, power, gas and water supplies have failed, and the dead are buried in parks and gardens. Jindřich Steinmann, who escaped the Jewish transports by hiding, comes back to find revolutionary guards living in his house. Meanwhile Kosťa Pakkala, a Finnish Russian, and Kuba Pikula comb the city for an American said to have penicillin, which Dr Lagužin's sanatorium badly needs. The novel mixes fable, grotesque and tragedy, with a magical cat named Kaňka.
