Months after they split up, the narrator and Marie each have someone new, yet neither has let go. On a stifling summer night in Paris, both have just slept with their new partners when Marie phones him in a panic: her lover, Jean-Christophe de G., has had a heart attack. The narrator hurries over and watches the paramedics struggle in vain, and the storm-heavy night draws the former couple tentatively back together. A second part goes back to Tokyo, where Marie first met Jean-Christophe, who breeds horses for racing. His horse Zahir has failed a doping test and must be smuggled out of Japan, and the animal's frantic flight, boxed in the hold of a freight aircraft tossed by storms, becomes an image of love itself. Desire, death and the weather run through the whole book.
