Bibiana and Belonísia are children deep in the Bahian interior when they come upon a knife hidden in a bag beneath their grandmother's bed. An accident follows that leaves one sister having to speak for the other. From there the novel follows them through life and death, struggle and redemption, mixing realism with magic and carrying a strong charge of social defiance.
